Argentine Court Orders Eviction of Company from Railway Terminal

Justice ordered the company Nueva Estación Once S.A. to vacate the terminal of the Sarmiento line in Buenos Aires, allowing Trenes Argentinos Operaciones to recover key spaces for its operation. The measure was ordered by Federal Administrative Court No. 6, under the direction of Judge Enrique Lavie Pico, and began to be executed in the early hours of Wednesday. According to what the Argentine News Agency was able to find out, the recovery includes areas necessary for technical, maintenance and administrative tasks. Once the process is completed, Trenes Argentinos will regain control of the offices on the mezzanine of the hall and on the access from Bartolomé Mitre, the bathrooms of the central hall, the meter room, the loading and unloading area, accesses to the basement and terrace, as well as the two basements used as a parking lot with access from Teniente General Juan Domingo Perón. The original concession had been granted to Nueva Estación Once S.A. in 2005 for 20 years, with no possibility of extension. However, in 2015 an addendum considered irregular was signed, which extended the contract until 2033 with fixed royalties considered ridiculous, between 197,000 and 226,000 pesos per month. The area granted comprised about 21,000 square meters, with 82 commercial premises on the ground floor, 39 on the mezzanine and two commercial parking lots of more than 11,000 square meters, which will now be re-tendered at market values. From Trenes Argentinos they indicated that the end of this concession marks the closing of a period characterized by lack of controls, outdated contracts and inefficient use of railway space, far from transparency criteria. During this management, the Commercial area of the state company ordered more than 1,000 railway assets, reduced the number of expired contracts, recovered invaded properties and strengthened control mechanisms. As a result, annual income from royalties will increase from 914 million pesos at the beginning of the management to more than 6,000 million in 2025, with a projection of 9,000 million for the following year.
